descriptions of the term:

Slag

Slag is a mineral by-product generated during metallurgical processes or energy production. It is widely used as a raw material in the cement industry, road construction, and various other industrial applications.

In the iron and steel industry, slag is formed during the melting process through the reaction of gangue constituents with added fluxes. Its chemical and mineralogical composition can vary considerably depending on the raw materials and process conditions.

Blast furnace slag, for example, is widely used as a valuable supplementary cementitious material in the production of blast furnace cement. Other types of slag are utilized as construction materials or secondary raw materials.

To assess material quality, chemical composition is routinely determined by XRF, while mineralogical properties are analyzed using XRD.

HERZOG provides integrated laboratory solutions for the automated preparation and analysis of slag samples. The portfolio includes systems for crushing, milling, pressed pellet preparation, borate fusion and the automated handling of XRF and XRD samples. Combined with PrepMaster Core and PrepMaster Analytics, analytical data can be automatically acquired, documented and evaluated, enabling reliable quality control and supporting the efficient use of slag as a valuable secondary raw material.
