HERZOG systems reliably handle the processing of iron ore samples from geological exploration and production processes. We cover all the necessary process steps - drying, crushing, splitting, grinding, pelletizing and/or borate fusion - with the highest precision.
As a matter of course, our laboratory processes comply with all relevant ISO standards, such as ISO 3082, and our solutions are flexibly tailored to your application and sample load. We offer you a wide range of automation systems, from compact systems (e.g. HP-BTM) to large robotic laboratories that prepare several hundred samples a day.
For mineralogical analyses, we also offer special XRD processing techniques that support you in controlling concentration processes such as froth flotation.
In cooperation with our partner FLSmidth, we supply complete and fully automated systems for vessel loading certification. In port laboratories, the high peak throughput and large sample load usually require systems with several robots. These are often mounted on one longitudinal axis so that all machines and components in the automation can be reached. Your advantages with HERZOG port laboratories:
- Fully automatic determination of all relevant data such as particle size distribution, moisture, and chemical composition of the vessel's cargo
- Compliance with all relevant standards, including ISO 3082, ISO 3087, and ISO 4701
- Sample supply to laboratory according to mass- or time-based protocol after primary, secondary and tertiary sampling
- Further processing: representative splitting, sample accumulation, sieving, moisture determination, crushing, pulverizing and preparation for chemical analysis by producing pressed tablets or glass beads
HERZOG and FLSmidth laboratory systems enable the complete, highly precise and accurate analysis of geological and technological copper samples. Our systems usually include drying cabinets, combined crusher-splitters, laboratory mills and presses as well as fusion machines. We also offer you:
- Specific solutions for the mineralogical analysis of blast-hole and geological samples as well as other special materials
- Pulverizing and pelletizing machines specially developed for XRD and NIR analysis
- particularly gentle sample preparation, e.g. with the HERZOG HP-PD6 diffractometry press and the innovative HP-PKM and HP-SKM automatic ball mills
In cooperation with FLSmidth, we are the leading supplier of laboratory systems for the gold mining industry. Our complete systems not only convince through contamination-free and residue-free crushing, splitting, and grinding of ores. On request, we can also integrate further fully automated analytical methods for determining precious metal contents. Here you have the choice between three methods:
Fire Assay: The FIFA process developed and patented by FLSmidth creates the conditions for fully automated operation of the entire fire assay process, reduces lead oxide, and minimizes the exposure of laboratory personnel to noise, dust, fumes and heat.
ICP-analysis: Our automated LiquidLabs enable the chemical extraction of the relevant elements using different methods for subsequent analysis by ICP.
PhotonAssayTM: Together with FLSmidth, we have developed an automated system that can prepare grade control, exploration and stockpiling samples for analysis with high-energy X-rays. For maximum utilization of the analysis unit, we have specially tailored our system to meet the requirements of the PhotonAssayTM process and achieve a high throughput.
PhotonAssay is a registered trademark of Chrysos Corporation.
For the analysis of sludge from different flotation processes, we have developed special laboratory systems that efficiently cover all important process steps:
Sampling and homogenizationg: After sampling from the flotation plant, the sludge is pumped into the laboratory by a pneumatic system. There, the samples are homogenized in the receiver to produce a composite sample from several spot samples and ensures that the solids do not settle.
Splitting and dewatering: The samples are then divided using the HERZOG sludge divider and dewatered using special filter presses HFTA or HFTM. The application of compressed air is combined with the use of special multifilament filters and the addition of flocculants. The remaining residual moisture is reduced using air circulation ovens or microwaves.
Crushing and splitting: The resulting filter cake is crushed and divided using special machines.
Grinding, pelletizing or fusion: The next step involves preparation of the samples for XRF analysis by grinding, pelletizing, or fusion. You also have the option of integrating a HERZOG LiquidLab to carry out automatic extraction for ICP analysis, e.g. of phosphate samples.
Drying: Alternatively, we offer special belt drying systems that perform effective dehydration using infrared drying. The belt dryers can be connected to a pneumatic tube system for automatic transportation to the analytical laboratory.

A crucial step for sample preparation in the mining industry is reducing the grain size so that further processing, e.g., by pulverizing is possible. Our crushing systems have been specially designed for the pre-crushing of sample material in your industry - and deliver reliable results every time.
HERZOG jaw crusher
Our range includes a comprehensive spectrum of jaw crushers for the effective crushing of samples with different feed quantities, grain sizes, hardnesses and material properties. HERZOG jaw crushers are available as stand-alone machines or in combination with a divider (e.g. HP-WCSA).

Looking for alternatives? Our semi-automatic fusion systems such as the HAF-16, Bead One HF and Bead One R support you in the effective design of your sample preparation without full automation.
We provide special automation equipment for the preparation of samples to be analyzed diffractometry:
Vibratory disk mills: By using the HERZOG HP-MA vibratory disk mill, grinding results can be achieved that are well suited for mineralogical analyses.
Automatic ball mills: As an alternative to grinding with a ring and stone, we offer you our HP-SKM ball mill. Used as part of a robot automation system, it enables the grinding of materials in grinding vessels up to a size of 125 ccm.
The HERZOG HP-PKM planetary ball mill is integrated into an automatic belt system and can accommodate grinding vessels with a volume of up to 250 ccm. The grinding balls are sorted and the grinding vessel is cleaned automatically.
Diffractometer presses: After grinding, the sample material is automatically released and can then be further processed in the HERZOG HP-PD6 diffractometer press. Our HP-PD6 model enables the production of pressed tablets with optimum properties for XRD analysis.
The dosing unit of the HP-PD6 precisely doses the material into the ring. The dosing unit is then cleaned without leaving any residue to prevent any carry-over into subsequent samples. The material is pelletized inside the ring at low pressure to avoid any orientation of the crystal structure. The automatically inserted button provides the necessary stabilization of the material within the ring. These well-proven preparation steps create excellent conditions for a successful Rietvield analysis.
We design and implement different screening processes for various materials and applications:
Screening of ores: For the screening of ores, we offer you our screening tower, which enables the classification of up to ten grain size fractions. Additional automation components for weighing and screen cleaning allow fully automatic operation with the aid of a robot. This HERZOG solution complies with ISO 4701.
Separation of oversize and undersize fractions: Automatic HERZOG tumbler screening machines with ultrasonic excitation reliably separate top and bottom grain. The combination of both excitation methods not only makes sieving easier. At the same time, efficient material discharge and thorough cleaning of the screen are also guaranteed.
Screening of special materials: For special materials such as limestone, automated HERZOG linear vibrating screens can be used, which allow classification into up to three fractions. Here too, material input and output of the sub-fractions are fully automatic.
Particle analysis: Of course, we can integrate all types of particle analyzers (dynamic digital image analysis, laser granulometry) into your automation system on request.
